Hi I’m Julie.

Copywriter, editor, storyteller.

It all started when…

Well, where do I start?! I've had an interesting career trajectory that's for sure and I've worked in a number of different sectors but throughout my various career paths there has been one thing that has connected me through all my various roles: words......their power...….their impact.....their life changing capabilities. Their power to captivate, educate, inspire, grow confidence and build us up. The importance of words is often underrated, I mean they're just words aren't they? How important can they really be? Well, in business, words are everything. They make your business stand out from the crowd and inspire people to take action.

As a child my affinity with writing was pretty clear. I was that kid who would spend all their spare time reading anything and everything they could get their hands on. I would spend hours making up my own little story books from cover to cover and reading my new 'creations' to unsuspecting family members! I just loved the idea that I could take a blank piece of paper and transform it using my words into a fantastical story transporting the reader to a completely new land. I never really knew what I 'wanted to be when I grew up' but I knew that somehow it would involve words. Based on this it was probably not a surprise to anyone when I decided to choose English & American Literature at the University of Kent as my degree course.

After finishing University I took the somewhat obvious career path of becoming a secondary school English teacher and ultimately I began to specialise in working with learners with literacy difficulties (both children and adults). I absolutely adored teaching but (as any teachers reading this will know) it's certainly not a career path for the faint hearted! Over time I became disillusioned with the constant emphasis on targets and results, rather than focussing on learners as individuals. Let's just say my youthful enthusiasm was very quickly becoming burnt out with several years in the job and literally no work/life balance so unfortunately I decided, just as many teachers have done before me, that it was time to move on to pastures new. When I look back now it does seem completely crazy (or should I say courageous and well thought out?!) that I left my career in teaching with no job lined up to go to and although I wasn't quite sure what on earth I was going to do next I knew it had to involve writing of some kind...……….(or I hoped it would at least).

Thankfully within a few weeks I had a copywriting role lined up with a Business to Business news agency and I gained over 8 years of experience within Business to Business publications both writing and editing copy in sectors including telecoms, finance, pharmaceuticals, the airline industry, IT, publishing and property. You name it, I've probably written about it. I absolutely adore writing copy, for me at least, there's nothing quite like that moment when you achieve that perfect flow of words and everything just 'connects'. I imagine it's the same kind of 'buzz' that an adrenaline junkie gets when they jump out of an airplane or bungee jump into a ravine (although it's not likely I'll ever find out for sure as I have no intention of trying either of those things).

So after gaining decades of experience with words, whether it be through writing, editing, proof reading, teaching or story telling, I've decided to take the plunge and set up on my own to create Lemon Drop Copywriting. My passion is for creating copy that really makes businesses stand out and not only gets their message across but does so in words that actually sound as if they've written them themselves. I'm all about authenticity and really understanding the clients’ vision for the copy they’re commissioning. Let's face it, if the words don't sound like they're from you, then they're less likely to capture your audiences’ imagination.
